So I was watching Cobra TV and his "SHIPS!!!" video and he talked about the certain classes of ships, such as Explorer, Trader, and Fighter, anyway I was thinking, Why don't we have Mining class ship. The features for the mining class ship could be a certain type of beam where it extracts minerals, has a high storage, medium defense or hull strength, high hyperdrive, but no weapons other than the extraction beam, which could do little to no damage.
As far as we know, mining is done with omnitool. This requires the player to be out of the ship. The characteristics you described such as good hull and large storage sounds more like a trader ship. However, the mining ship is a good idea tho. You could have it hover over planets mining the surface or mining asteroids. Not sure if asteroids drop minerals or not. Furthermore, the sentinels, attack the player for deforming the landscape, which is probably required to find rare minerals unless you find a cave. If you were in a ship how could the sentinels effectively police this?
You have a point about the sentinels, maybe instead of having a mining ship, the mining beam could be an upgrade to trader ships or Fighter ships, but if we did have mining ships, the sentinels could attack the player with a 2 star wanted level, but certain mining ships could have a stealth tech which you could activate and get away while sentinels search for you, and maybe the police like ships or sentinel fighter ships could continue to attack you until you use a hyper-drive (I forget the real name if I'm wrong) to travel to another solar system.
On the topic of materials on asteroids, Sean did say we could land on asteroids so its not entirely illogical to maybe be able to find materials on them when you land. And considering there tends to be some rare elements in asteroids in real life, its more then likely if we find one big enough it will have something of use on it.
That would be a good idea. But, it will contradict one of the main reasons of going on a planet anyway. Which is to get resources, but protect yourself from the sentinels who don't want you to mine the planet. If you just mined the resources from your ship, you can quickly fly away when sentinels show up. What would work is if you can mine the asteroids in space. Now that would be cool. Still, I really like the idea of a miner ship.
Ah you see, this is just what want to do. Just to fully explore a couple of planets to their fullest extent. So, for me, some kind of exploration vehicle would be ideal. I am hoping that my initial ship can zip me around my planets surface? I do hope it can. I have seen a jet pack on one demo. Sean also had a god mode implemented which looked similar to the fly mode in Minecraft. With luck it will be available in the retail version.
If I can have multiple saves then another avatar may head to the galaxies centre (or not).
I already got a name for at least one of my Ships maybe two, as I discover some designs, I am going to name one if it looks right for general combat and exploring. The Smart or Smar, Standard, Mining, Armored Recon Tactical. And then the Asmart or Asmar, which would be the Advanced Standard Mining Armored Recon Tactical. But at the same time, without opening saying it. It could be As smart, or Ass smart. Or Smart Ass, without openly just saying that is what it is. I came up with the two names well working on writing a Scifi Story based on a VR them or format. Like a Scifi adventure in the style of Royal Roads.
I am sure in the end I will come up with a number of different things, but at the same time I am not going to be going around naming things Dingle or things of that nature. It would have mostly some acronym method. For instance naming one Travel, with it meaning. Tabula Rasa, Arbiters and Vanguards of Ethereal Life. T.R.A.V.E.L, it more or less is suggesting. The method or use the ship could or might have in this way. And in theory by naming it so long as the game is active the action of naming it is in some way ensuring you are remembered. And to be remembered, is the act of eternal Life. And Ethereal Life and other stuff suggests all kinds of things. To travel is also the root of the word to suffer more or less look it up sometime. But it makes a very good name depending on how you look at it. So in this format, it would be the Blank Slate, Observer, Protector, of Ethereal Life. If you translate the Acronym for Travel, that I am using.
I am more worried about figuring out things to name stuff before hand to a degree, then I am about classes of ships, tel I buy them or use them. But I suspect I will get a trading ship, in order to have mostly if I can more mounting points then standard if that is in fact true.
If you can upgrade your storage, armor, weapons, drive, and hyper-drive on any ship, i find it hard to see where you would find ship types. Wouldn't there just be ships with different configurations? those cool looking triangle shaped "Fighters" that we see in some of the trailers shooting at you or pirates, if 1 of those came with a lot of storage, upgraded hyper-drive, good armor, but standard weapons, it would be a "Trader" ship right, even tho its class is "Fighter"? or if you had that boxy looking ship in the Trade Trailer, it that had upgraded weapons, drive, armor, a standard hyper-drive, and not much storage, it would be a "Fighter"? I wonder if the question we may want to ask ourselves is if a ship comes in, with most of the options you want, but some other player has named that class/type "Space Dick" or some other name you don't like, will you still buy it? As for naming types/classes of ships ill name them on what they look like and offer as options. but probably not Trader, Fighter, etc. more like scimitar, axe, dagger, triangle, truck, van, shark, whale, lunch box, etc.

I would like to see a wider variety of weapons available. Being able to chose various load outs would be great. Having weapons like disrupter beams, torpedoes, missiles or rail guns could really make things more interesting.
