I hold up my hand. I am an apostate. I have betrayed my ideals. I feel I can no longer call myself a Bedouin Cartographer. I have not cartographed for a single second since I started playing NMS. Instead I have jumped from system to system with a gay abandon since launch day. I have added BC to all my system and planet names but that's it.
Once I saw the size and scope of my home planet I got totally daunted by the fact of A its size and B the sheer number and variety of the plants and animals that lived there the thought of renaming all of them went right out the window!
Now, it appears, nearly a month after launch, that there is a possibility that all that naming might have gone west anyway as nobody's flora and fauna names are being stored anyway. However this does not excuse me in any way for betraying the BC ideals.
Not that I could go back even if I wanted, since I have a complete inability to operate the galactic map, which is far from the best thing for a supposed cartographer to say!
As for planet mapping? Are you mad? It's next to impossible. I doubt I have ever landed at the same place I ever took off from! On over 26 planets. The game seems, to me, not geared for mapping. The impetus is to keep moving inwards, onwards and not to linger.
Again, it's no excuse I know. I signed up for this. I would lower my head in shame but I prefer to fire up the game and move on, like a leaf blowing the the breeze.
I joined the fraternity in all good faith, feeling security in the bonds of friendship in pursuing a common goal. It was a help in the dark days before launch. I even created blogs which now gather dust.
So if you want to cast me off I fully concur. I humbly await the axe to fall.
I don't see what you've done wrong. From what I understand, The Bedouin Cartographers is about freedom. Yes, violence is not encouraged but other than that we can do whatever we want.
I haven't been naming much. I haven't been mapping the galaxy or any planets. I have simply travelled from planet to planet seeking the beauty of the universe. I don't think you have done anything wrong.
As you've been jumping from star to star, planet to planet, and waypoint to waypoint, your uploads have been mapping your progress and sent to the server for others to see when they arrive. A map is just a paper until it's actually used. And it will be used by someone who comes to your planets. You are a cartographer, though your tools and media may be different, you are still mapping your path as you go!
No worries dehelix . Both Nivekisrom and myself have tried every which way to try and map a planet. Without coordinates it is virtualy impossible. One can map small areas when able to screenshot a beacon outzoom, but that's it. Lol, we have tried hexagon overlays, compass point overlays, Nivek has even taped degree intervals along the base of his screen to guage degrees of body turn to see if we could use a visual system that way. We have tried many different ways all to no avail.
But rest easy. Okay, we are the 'Bedouin Cartographers', we have tried to map worlds with no success, the galaxy would be an even bigger imossibility Which I already stated months ago. All we have left, and I mentioned this months ago elswhere even before the game went live, is the ability to map our journey. I am doing that with a journal and a journey map, and am also looking at a planetary creature recod journal too. I am mapping my Journey so to speak in those ways. That is the best any of us can do. Some are doing it via video on Youtube, or in documents, others in discussing their experiences here on the enms site in threads, or in the shoutbox. It's all good, we that are still active are doing what we said we would do, we are exploring.
Add to that the fact I have been actively updating our website with any relavant information for those new to the game, and, as a record for the hell of it, then even we few in some small way are fullfilling the tenets of the BC. As LonelyForces has said, we are about freedom. The freedom to explore, to discover, to travell where we will when we choose. We owe nobody, we allign with nobody, Martial or Pirate, we take no heed. We are freebirds, always were, and always will be. We are the Nomads, the travellers, the unravellers. To stand still is an anathama, as it is to reach a goal. The Journey is everything brothers and sisters. Be free or be a slave.

sunlion , you can start mapping an area by doing it the way older cartographers did it.
At a waypoint, use a transmission terminal with a bypass chip to get two locations (preferably different types of locations) and name those two Waypoint B and C respectively.
Stand at a waypoint (A), face toward waypoint (B) and measure that distance (using time from a standstill as a measure of distance, as that's how long it would take you to walk the linear path there without slopes).
Standing at A, point to Waypoint C, measure that distance.
Standing at either B or C's waypoint, measure the distance between those two (the other's transmission destination should not yet be reached).
Get your compass out (the drawing implement that creates circles) and a straight edge (ruler).
Draw a line and mark the ends A and B.
Take your compass and draw a circle the radius of the distance to C from point A and the radius of the distance to C from point B. Where those two circles join, one of the two is where Waypoint C is. You can divine which point is right by looking at where the other two points are in relation to point C, in game.
Now that you have a precise map, time to determine orientation. It would be more accurate to have another person to look at the sky at the same exact time, but since we don't, you'll just need to note where the sun rises and sets at on particular waypoint in relation to other waypoints. This will tell you no only the coordinates, but also the severity of degree with which the planet's angle is away from the sun (if any), and you can then know how close you are to the geographical poles (not magnetic poles).
Aye that is one method nivekisrom used. nice to see you also came to that method. To map a whole planet would take an age though and that is why I gave up on it in the end, as there are so many POi's across the surface of a planet that to map whole planet would take a great deal of time and dedication. Something to do possibly though one day as a project for sure.
That is quite possible, not done much Monolith searching as yet. If that is the case, then one would only need 1 point of reference near a monolith that you dont save at , in order to have a stable reference stay bright and active, (ie the Icon of that POI) for orientation purposes. The mapping then is a case of following the Monoliths and noting distance and orientation from one to the next. (ie before a monolith is engaged, the line on the circle is to left when facing it, after engageing it rotates to right showing direction of next Monolith). So long as one has that one point of reference that is unchanging, ie that unsaved marker, one can then use that marker as the 0,0 reference and where it sits in relation to the pattern the monolith chain gives you and the distances between each monolith and of course you can check distances from that 0,0, point to each monolith seperately too. The only thing missing would be a compass point to orientate oneself from and a sunrise or sunset will aid with that.
I have been able to establish relative compass directions from the observation of shadow position and movement. I observed the real time interval between local noons. This established the real-time interval of the day/night cycle. I can also infer by the position north or south of the object casting the shadow, whether I am observing from the northern or southern planetary hemisphere. By setting a timer to local noon as indicated by minimum shadow length, and travelling a known distance in ks east or west I was able to observe the real-time interval between noon at the new location and noon at the orginal location. This interval divided into the known distance give the speed at which the planet can be assumed to rotate in ks/sec. Multiply this ks/sec value by the observed interval between noons in seconds and the result should be the circumference of the planet in ks at that latitude. Other observations seem to indicate that 1 U=1ks/sec and that the walking speed is appx. 5ks/sec. In the real world, average human walking speed is 5 ft/sec. this suggests that 1ks = 1ft. Both of my observations to date have had day/night cycles of 30 min RT. If the progression of time has been compressed to a standard 30 min RT regardless of the size of the planet, we would expect larger planets to have higher ks/sec rotation rates. Having only two data points, there is insufficient data to confirm these assumptions at the moment. A physical circumnavigation of the planet at a constant speed and elevation might be one way to confirm a planetary circumference for comparison to the calculated value.
